Team Ropers Take Control at San Antonio Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO --- While team roping may not be the most exciting rodeo event, San Antonio fans got to see five outstanding runs in the AT&T Center on Wednesday.

Oklahomans Coleman Proctor from Miami, and Jake Long from Alva, had the fast run of the night at 5.0 seconds. They are now in the lead for the first round of competition. The margin from fifth to first is only one second with all of these teams making their first appearance Wednesday night.

Chad Masters helped Allen Bach win a world title in heeling last December at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). The North Texas duo roped their steer in 5.2 seconds here. They were followed by Kevin Stewart and Cody Cowden who had a 5.8 second run. Stewart makes his home in Glenrose, Texas, and Cowden came all the way from Merced, Calif.

Texans own the next two positions. Matt Tyler and Richard Durham both live near Weatherford and had a 5.9-second time. The 6.0-second run that is currently in fifth place was made by David Key from Caldwell and Kory Koontz from Sudan.

The steer wrestling is also very tight here with just two-tenths of a second between first and fifth. There were two 3.5 second runs in the AT&T Center Wednesday to take the lead in the first round. Sean Mulligan, from Coleman, Okla., and Dane Hanna from Littleton, Colo., took those.

Josh Peek from Pueblo, Colo., made his run here at the fourth performance, stopped the clock in 3.6, currently second. Clint Robinson and Casey McMillen round out the top five. Robinson, from Spanish Fork, Utah, and McMillen from Craig, Colo., have times of 3.7 seconds.

Brad Pierce has the high-marked ride so far at this year's rodeo in bull riding. He scored 92-points on Powder River Rodeo's Mud Duck. Pierce is originally from Australia, but now lives in Snyder, Texas. Jimmy Crosby from Azle, Texas, had a collision with Bar T Rodeo's Let It Ride that ended with Crosby unconscious. He was taken from the arena where on-site doctors evaluated him. He was coherent as he left the arena and appears to be just fine. The Justin Sports Medicine Team will evaluate him tomorrow before the competition to see if he will ride.

All of these contestants have their second appearance here on Thursday beginning at 7 p.m.
