College National Finals Rodeo Comes to Close

CASPER, Wyo.--- The 60th annual College National Finals Rodeo came to a close at the Casper Events Center on Saturday.

Winning the first championship of the night was second generation cowboy Kaycee Feild. The son of five time Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Lewis Feild, Kaycee had an 84.5 point ride on Vold Rodeo’s horse named Hypnotic to win the final round and dominate the over-all standings.

He won the national championship with 325 points for Utah Valley State College where his dad is also his coach. Feild won the title by 20 points ahead of the man in second place, Matt Smith from the University of Tennessee—Martin finished behind Feild with 305.5 points.

In tie-down freshman Johnny Salvo a freshman at New Mexico State University left the arena with the fastest total time of 41.6 seconds. Salvo’s final run here of 9.5 seconds put him second in the finals behind Jake Pratt of the University of Wyoming who stopped the clock in 9.3 seconds. Pratt finished in second over-all with 43.8 seconds.

There were several ties in spite of the fact that each contestant that won a title competed here four times. Hope Thompson from McNeese State University and Krista Johnson from Panhandle State University both had total times of 11.9 seconds to tie for the breakaway roping. In goat tying it was Kobi Olineck from Dickinson State University and Megan Albrecht from New Mexico State University tied with times of 27.6 seconds.

There was also a tie for the women’s all-around championship. Arena de la Cruz from Weatherford College and Jordan Crossley from Walla Walla Community College each had 260 points. Crossley competed in barrel racing and breakaway roping and de la Cruz qualified in team roping and break away roping.

The men’s team championship went to Walla Walla Community College. Their total of 740 points earned them $14,000 in scholarships from U.S.

Smokeless Tobacco Company. The women’s team champions were the University of Nevada – Las Vegas. They earned $7,000 in scholarships.

Wyoming’s governor Dave Freudenthal was on hand to watch the championship round. "Wyoming is honored to host the College National Finals Rodeo," Governor Freudenthal said. "Casper goes all out to make sure that this is a great event for the spectators and for the contestants. We’re delighted to have it here and look forward to it staying here."
