Edmonton, Alta. - With one day left on the Canadian Finals Rodeo schedule,
three titles have been determined and a fourth unofficially won in front of a
sold-out crowd of 16,766.
Steer wrestler Cody Cassidy, Donalda, Alta. became impossible to catch,
posting his second first-place finish of this year’s CFR. Cassidy stopped the
clock at 3.5 seconds, bringing his 2008 CFR earnings to more than $27,000 and
season earnings to more than $62,000.
Even though brother Kyreon won the evening’s performance with a 77 on
Franklin Rodeo’s Frost Bite, novice saddle bronc rider Rylan Geiger, Bracken,
Sask. earned his first Canadian title when he placed second on Peters and Sons’
Wolf Silver. Geiger scored a 73, bringing his CFR earnings to $4,400 and
total season winnings to $9,198.
Novice bareback rider Denver DeRose, Kamloops, B.C., rode Big Stone Rodeo’s
Red Dirt Nation for 66 points and a second-place finish, enough to give him his
first CFR title.
Boys steer riding also wrapped up Saturday night, with Zeke Thurston, Big
Valley, Alta., winning the title. Thurston placed first three times during this
CFR and is the first boys steer riding champion to be crowned at the CFR in
seven years.
Bareback rider Davey Shields, Jr., Bashaw, Alta., scored 87.5 on board Harvey
Northcott’s Dirty Diana, for a first place finish.
There was a two-way tie in the team roping. Jim Randle, Okotoks, Alta. and
Rocky Dallyn, Nanton, Alta. matched the 4.5 seconds posted by Braidy Davies,
Brooks, Alta. and Stacy Cornet, Mossleigh, Alta.
Defending saddle bronc champion Dustin Flundra, Pincher Creek, Alta., teamed
up with Calgary Stampede’s Gross Beetle for an 85-point ride.
Tie-down roper Alwin Bouchard, Scandia, Alta., placed first with a time of
7.6 seconds.
Saskatoon, Sask. cowgirl Lauren Chad claimed top spot this evening with a
time of 15.06 seconds.
There was a four-way tie for first in the bull riding, with Denton Edge,
Marwayne, Alta., Scott Schiffner, Strathmore, Alta., Max Fortmuller, DeWinton,
Alta. and Ty Elliot, Vernon, B.C. all scoring 85.5. Their respective rides were
Calgary Stampede’s Border Denial, Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Back Track,
Calgary Stampede’s Before Dark and Vold Rodeo Ltd.’s Night Prowler.
