Lance Berkman Hopes to Hit Grand Slam With Ballpark Horse Sale
 Steven Long

HOUSTON -- Houston’s Minute Maid Park will turn into a giant cattle and horse barn on April 16, 2008, when Grand Slam Genetics Angus Sale, and the Lance Berkman Horse sale dominate the diamond. The horse sale is the brain child of the Houston Astros power hitter, and his brother-in-law and former college roommate, Jake Baker, a former Cincinnati Red and a certified John Lyons trainer.

Baker will be selling his personal horse Max that afternoon.

The two have been thinking about doing a sale of Quarter Horses on the grand scale for some time now.

“When we were at Rice we went to the horse sale at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo,” Berkman told Texas Horse Talk Magazine. “We wanted to buy but we didn't have the money. We both just loved the experience.”

The two are partnering with Bob McClaren’s 44 Farms Angus Sale.

But why have a horse sale in the unlikely venue of a baseball park?

“You can actually handle a lot of animals there,” Berkman said. "It just made sense.”

“After all, Minute Maid Park is Lance’s office, his place of work,” Baker said.

The sale begins at 1 P.M. For more information contact Jake Baker at Jake.Baker@Staubach.com.
