Asay Takes Bull Riding Lead at Denver Rodeo DENVER --- Kanin Asay left Las Vegas last December as the reserve world champion bull rider. The talented athlete from Powell, Wyo., finished the year with $218,597 in earnings and while he had a great year, he wasn’t completely satisfied. The ultimate prize in rodeo is the gold buckle that goes with the world championship eluded him by less than $10,000. He’s on a mission this year to leave the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo wearing the buckle. Asay had his first ride at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in the Denver Coliseum on Monday afternoon. His score of 75 points set him up for his second ride here Tuesday afternoon. He got on the bull owned by David Bailey named Smokin’ Gun for an outstanding 86-point effort. Asay now leads the over-all standings by one point with 161 on two rides. Right behind him is Spud Jones, from Tohatchi, N.M., with 160. Chelse Day from Tahlequah, Okla., is in third place with 156. The bulls have been more successful here than the bull riders. There have only been four contestants here so far that have ridden two bulls. The fourth position is held by Ross Kleven, from Westminster, Colo. He has a total of 152 points. There are still nine performances left before next Sunday’s finals, so there is a chance that more bull riders will be successful. However, these four men have a very good opportunity to finish in the top 12 of the over-all standings here and vie for a National Western Stock Show Rodeo championship. There are two performances here Wednesday, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Story Continues Below
