Canadian Dominating Saddle Bronc Riding in Denver
Susan Kanode

DENVER --- A Canadian is dominating the saddle bronc riding at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

Samuel Kelts rode at the Wednesday night performance and scored 88 points on Kesler Rodeo’s Smiling Cat. He came back to the Denver Coliseum Thursday morning and had nearly as much success, scoring 87 points on Burns Rodeo’s Fu Man Chu.

He is now atop the leader board with a total of 175 points on two rides, nearly 10 points ahead of his nearest competitor. He will definitely be a favorite to win his first National Western Stock Show Rodeo title at Sunday’s final round.

Kelts is currently in 16th place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Crusher Rental Standings. If he keeps riding like he is here in Denver, he will definitely move up in the standings and improve his opportunity to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo next December.

Thursday night’s rodeo featured fast times in the tie-down roping. The slowest of the top four runs was 8.5 seconds, by Clint Cooper of Decatur, Texas. All-around talent Cash Myers, from Athens, Texas, had the fastest run of the night at 7.8 seconds. Matt Kenney from Onamawa, Iowa and Royce Lynch from Deming, N.M., each had 8.0-second times. All of these men will make their second appearance here on Friday at the matinee performance which begins at 2 p.m. The evening performance begins at 7;30 p.m.

There are three rodeos on Saturday. At the conclusion of the evening performance, Sunday’s final qualifiers will be determined. The top 12 in each event will advance to the finals.
