Competition Tightening Up at Denver Rodeo DENVER --- With just three rodeos before Sunday’s final performance competition at the 102nd Annual National Western Stock Show Rodeo, competition is definitely heating up. Friday’s performances saw more success in tie-down roping. In the matinee, Clint Cooper, Royce Lynch and Matt Kenney, all were successful enough to make a bid for a qualification for the finals. All three men have total times of 17.5 seconds, putting them in a three-way tie for fifth place. Cooper from Decatur, Texas, is just coming off a successful year where he qualified for his second Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Lynch made the trip to Denver from Deming, N.M. Kenney came here from Onamawa, Iowa. Steer wrestler Ronnie Fields was out of competition most of last year after tearing up his knee at the 2006 NFR. That was his third qualification to the championship and he is looking for number four. Any money he wins here will certainly help. Fields had two successful runs here totaling 8.1 seconds. He is now tied for fourth through sixth position and is staying in Denver with the hopes of competing for the championship in the Denver Coliseum on Sunday. There are three performances here on Saturday, at 11 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. First and second round winners and final qualifiers will be announced at the conclusion of the 8 p.m. rodeo.
