DENVER --- The rodeo at the 102nd National Western Stock Show has come to a close with two repeat champions.

Cleve Schmidt from Belle Fourche, S.D., and Brittany Pozzi-Pharr from Victoria, Texas, both earned back-to-back championships. Schmidt won the bareback riding with 254 points on two rides. At the 2007 edition of the rodeo, Schmidt took home $11,006. This year he won $14,719.

“I got on some great horses,” Schmidt said. “Anytime you can come to a rodeo like this and win it’s good. It’s a great way to start the season and pretty exciting to win it twice.”

Winning the final round in bareback riding at the Denver Coliseum was Dusty LaValley from Crooked Creek, Alberta. He rode the three-time world champion bareback horse Grated Coconut from Calgary Stampede for 91 points.

Pozzi-Pharr took her great horse Stitch around the pattern in 15.51 seconds to win the final round. She came into Sunday’s rodeo in first place and never weakened. They had a total time of 46.49 seconds on two runs to win $13,439. She and Stitch also won the 2007 title.

Team roping brothers Riley and Brady Minor from Ellensburg, Wash., are on a huge roll. This is the first year that they have roped together and they already have three wins to their credit. They won titles in Billings, Mont., and Odessa, Texas, before coming here. Their total time of 16.3 seconds earned them each $6,515. The money will most likely move them into first place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Crusher World Standings.

Total pay-off at this year’s rodeo was $270,971. Several attendance records were broken, including the largest opening day in history at 44,616. Also the biggest single day in the history of the show was Saturday, Jan. 19 with 68,610.

Total attendance was 673,449, making this the 11th consecutive year the National Western has reported attendance of more than 600,000 spectators. Attendance at Sunday’s final rodeo was over 8,000 and near capacity
