Bynum Takes Early Lead at San Antonio Rodeo
Susan Kanode

SAN ANTONIO --- While it’s over 300 miles from Colorado City, Texas, to the AT & T Center, it might as well be next door for barrel racer Terra Bynum.

Bynum won the barrel racing title here in 2005, finished fifth in 2006 and last year finished as the reserve champion. With a great run here on Friday night, she is looking to win more money here in 2008 and would like to make the victory lap after the finals on Saturday night, Feb. 16

Her time of 14.29 seconds was just four-tenths off the arena record set by reigning world champion Brittany Pozzi-Pharr. Bynum will have her second and third runs here on Saturday.

T-Roy Orr was also close to the arena record in steer wrestling. Orr had a time of 3.3 seconds, just one-tenth off the record. Orr, from Lebanon, Tenn., is currently ninth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Crusher World Standings. He is very likely to win a portion of the $1 million in prize money up for grabs here, and could improve his position.

At the end of the regular season, the top 15 in the world standings qualify for rodeo’s premier event, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). San Antonio’s rodeo will make a significant difference in contestant’s quest to be in Las Vegas for the NFR next December where world championships are decided.

Normally, the bulls get the best of the bull riders. With the best livestock from a variety of stock contractors, on Friday night, it was the saddle broncs that reigned supreme.

There were only two of 12 riders that made it to the eight-second whistle. Everett Ashurst from Douglas, Ariz., is in the lead with a 74-point marking on Beutler Brothers and Cervi’s Jack Knife.

Chance Smart used the momentum he gained from winning the Xtreme Bulls here on Thursday to his advantage. Smart, from Philadelphia, Miss.,  took the lead in the bull riding with a 91-point effort on Andrews Rodeo’s Red Onion.

Rodeo competition continues on Saturday at 1 and 7:30 p.m.
