Cassidy Ties Steer Wrestling Arena Record at
San Antonio SAN ANTONIO --- In 2002, Curtis Cassidy competed in the steer wrestling at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Since that time, his only appearances in the Thomas and Mack Center have been with his team of horses helping other steer wrestlers. Cassidy, from Donalda, Alberta, wants to change that and took a step in that direction at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Monday night. Riding his great horse Willy and with the reigning world champion Jason Miller hazing for him, Cassidy tied the arena record at 3.2 seconds. This is in first place in the second round. While he is excited about his finish on Monday, he is more concerned about qualifying for next Saturday’s finals. He definitely has the opportunity to do that as well with a first round time of 4.3 seconds. Another quick run will see him staying in San Antonio for the finals and running at a title. The ultimate goal for any rodeo contestant is to win a gold buckle as a world champion. Luke Branquinho, from Los Alamos, Calif., did that in the steer wrestling in 2004. Branquinho has had two very fast runs here at 3.8 and 3.5 seconds. He is riding Cassidy’s horse Willie and will be trying to overtake Troy Orr’s lead here on Wednesday night when he runs his third steer. Orr, from Lebanon, Tenn., has a total time of 11.4 seconds on three runs. He competed in the first group of contestants and his lead has held through three more. With Branquinho and Cassidy chasing at his heels, Orr has a target on his back. Luke Haught from Weatherford, Texas, is the only bull rider from this group to have two qualified rides. Another one on Tuesday night will make him the fifth rider to ride all three bulls and almost assures him a spot in the finals. Competition gets underway in the AT&T Center at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
