Elshere Takes Lead in Saddle Bronc Riding

SAN ANTONIO --- After narrowly missing qualifying for the 2007 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR), saddle bronc rider J.J. Elshere is determined to be at the championship event in 2008.

Elshere, from Quinn, S.D., competed at the NFR in 2006 and was the most consistent bronc rider there, earning the rodeo’s saddle bronc riding championship. In 2007, he finished the year in 18th place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Crusher World Standings. The top 15 competed at the NFR in Las Vegas last December.

After an 84-point effort on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Royal Visit, Elshere took command of the saddle bronc riding at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Tuesday night. He is six points ahead of the second place contender, Cody Wright, who shared last year’s title here with Taos Muncy. Elshere has 245 points on three rides, compared to Wright’s 239.

Todd Herzog from Penhold, Alberta, matched up with a Sankey Rodeo horse for 87 points. Herzog is now tied for the lead in the third round of competition after his success on the horse named Barn Dance. Unfortunately, he did not last the required eight seconds on his previous ride. This will prevent him from qualifying for the finals here.

Cade Swor from Chico, Texas moved into second place in tie-down roping. His 8.3-second run on Tuesday gave him a total of 25.3 seconds, so he will be making plans to be back here on Saturday night for the finals.

The sixth and final group of contestants starts their first of three rounds of competition here Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
