SAN ANTONIO --- The first checks from the $1 million rodeo in San Antonio have been written.

The final group of contestants made their first appearance in the AT&T Center on Wednesday night at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo. Bryce Miller from Buffalo, S.D., moved into a tie for first place in the first round with an 81-point ride on Kesler Rodeo’s Starburst.   Miller, along with Bradley Harter from Weatherford, Texas, each won $6,056.

Holding onto the lead from the very first performance were the competitors in steer wrestling, women’s barrel race and bull riding. Terra Bynum, a former champion barrel racer here won with a 14.29 second run. This is the fastest run that has been run here so far and earned the Colorado City, Texas, cowgirl $4,827.

In steer wrestling, T-Roy Orr, from Lebanon, Tenn., is having the most success of his career. His 3.3 second run earned him $5,265. Chance Smart, from Philadelphia, Miss., won the first round of bull riding with his 91-point effort on Andrews Rodeo’s Red Onion. It added $6,838 to Smart’s earnings.

All three of these competitors lead the over-all standings here in their respective events.  They are making plans to come back to compete in Saturday’s finals and hoping to make the victory lap around the arena in the back of a GMC truck as the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo champion.

Garrett Nokes had to ride a borrowed horse in tie-down roping after his horse was killed in an accident. Nokes, from McCook, Neb., borrowed a horse from Giovanni Davis and won the first round with a 7.9-second run. It was worth $5,265. He is currently 10th in the standings and waiting to see how this group of competitors does to see if he will be roping here on Saturday night.

Riley and Brady Minor from Ellensburg, Wash., are some of the hottest team ropers on the trail. They lead the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Crusher World Standings and won the first round with a time of 4.8 seconds. It was worth $4,342 for each of them. Unfortunately, a no-time on their third steer will keep them from earning any more money here.

The second round of competition will be complete on Tuesday night’s rodeo beginning at 7 p.m.
