Stevenson Takes Bareback Riding Lead
SAN ANTONIO --- Bareback Rider Wes Stevenson, from Kaufman, Texas, earned a championship at the San Antonio Stock Show years ago, but it wasn’t in the rodeo arena. Stevenson showed the grand champion lamb here and used scholarships from the show to attend college at Texas Tech in Lubbock. While that was worthwhile for the 4-H member, he really would like to earn the ultimate prize from the rodeo. He put himself in position to do that at the sixth performance in the A T & T Center on Tuesday night. Stevenson rode the horse named Hurricane Terry from Calgary Stampede for an 80-point marking. Combined with his previous two scores of 83 and 85, he now has the over-all lead with 248 points. Jess Davis, from Payson, Utah is in second with 243 points. The saddle bronc riders stepped up to the plate with three new riders moving up in the standings. Cody Taton from Newell, S.D., is the new leader with 234 points on three rides. Montanans Shane Moran and Jesse Kruse are second and third with 231 and 227 points respectively. There are new leaders in the third round of all the men’s timed events. Beau Franzen, from Sidney, Mont., and Spud Duvall, from Checotah, Okla., both had 3.6-second efforts in steer wrestling. In tie-down roping, Clay Cerny, from Brazoria, has the fastest time at 7.5. Team ropers B.J. Campbell from Benton, City, Wash., and Russell Cardoza from Knights Ferry, Calif., stopped the clock in 4.2 seconds to mover atop the leader board. Unfortunately, these men were not as successful in their first two rounds of competition, so they will be hoping that their leads hold and they get checks in the third round. A new group of contestants will be making their first of three appearances here on Wednesday night beginning at 7 p.m Story Continues Below
