Fancy Free and McDaniel Match up at San Antonio
Susan Kanode

SAN ANTONIO --- Justin McDaniel might be considered a fancy free bareback rider and getting an opportunity to ride the great horse named Fancy Free from Classic Pro Rodeo just might help prove the point.

McDaniel from Porum, Okla., rode the horse for 88 points at the AT&T Center on Wednesday night. The talented cowboy is coming off his first trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) where he won over $76,000 and finished the 2007 season in third place.

There is nothing that would make McDaniel happier than winning a world title, but he has 10 months to work at that. In the mean-time, a San Antonio Rodeo championship and the buckle that comes with it would surely put a smile on his face.

His 88-point ride is at the top of the leader board in the first round of competition and the highest marked ride so far at this year’s rodeo. With the top horses from 16 different stock contractors here, he will have an opportunity for another great ride.

Garrett Nokes has been to the NFR in steer wrestling, but the talented all-around cowboy made his mark here in tie-down roping. Nokes, from McCook, Neb.,  took the lead in the first round with a blazing 7.9 second run.

World champion saddle bronc rider Taos Muncy was successful here on Wednesday with a 77-point ride. This is unlikely to place, but if he has high scores here in the next two rounds, he could be back for the finals on Feb. 16. Muncy was co-champion here last year with Cody Wright. Winning the championship gave him the opportunity to pursue his goal of qualifying for the NFR and earning his first world title.

All of these men will have their second round competition here on Thursday.
