Muncy Shows San Antonio Championship Style
SAN ANTONIO --- A year ago when Taos Muncy competed in the saddle bronc riding at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo, he was just hoping to get a check. “I was broke,” Muncy, from Corona, N.M., said. “I was here and at Jackson (Miss.) and if I didn’t win some money, I was going home.” Muncy left the AT&T Center sharing the championship title with Cody Wright and nearly $20,000. That set him on a pace to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and win the world championship. After an 81 point ride on Harry Vold’s Junpin’ Jack on Friday night, Muncy is tied for second in the over-all standings here. While he may not maintain the position, he is likely to qualify for the final round on Feb. 15 and could win back-to-back titles. There were several other lead changes here on Friday, but the biggest shake up came in the team roping. Coleman Proctor and Jake Long took the over-all lead with a total time of 16.0 seconds. With Proctor heading and Long heeling, they stopped the clock in 4.7 seconds Friday night to add to their success. They are currently second in the third round behind Jake Stanley from Hermiston, Ore., and Marty Becker from Edmonton, Alberta, who had a 4.3-second run. Stanley and Becker were a no-time in their first run so they have no hopes of qualifying for the finals. Matt Funk from Hermiston, Ore., and Bucky Campbell from Benton City, Wash., are in second place here with a total time of 16.3 seconds. Third is Turtle Powell from Alpine, Texas, and Travis Graves from Jay, Okla., with a 17.0. World champs Jake Barnes from Scottsdale, Ariz., and Clay O’Brien Cooper from Morgan Mill, Texas are now in fourth with 18.7. A California bull rider added his name to the list of contestants that have been successful on three rides. Thomas Bert from Modesto was 79 points in the third round and is now in third place over-all with 233 points. Bert is the third bull rider here so far to ride all three bulls and is very likely to qualify for the finals. A new group of contestants will have their first and second round competitions here on Saturday at 1 and 7:30 p.m. A new group of contestants will be making their first of three appearances here on Wednesday night beginning at 7 p.m. Story Continues Below
