'WALK THIS WAY' - A TALE OF A BULL As Told To Susan Kanode My name is 'Walk This Way'![]() And I AM a bull with 'Baditude'
If you’ve been keeping up with my tales, you know that I have adjusted to the change of being at home more. It hasn’t changed the fact that I still want to buck off a cowboy or get him to that 90-point ride. So imagine how excited I was when Mack (Altizer) brought me out of the pasture and put me in a pen. He told me to get ready to go to Houston. I just knew I was going to get some bucking action. I stayed in for about a day and waited and waited for a trailer to back up to the gate. Next thing I know, Mack comes out and tells me I get to go back out with the girls. I’m wondering what in the world is going on. I thought I was going to hook up with my Bad Company Rodeo traveling buddies and go perform on a football field. That would be cool, from Madison Square Garden last year to Reliant Center this year. Then I found out that Born to Boogie, Super Freak, Pretty Vegas, Crazy Train, Bad to the Bone, YMCA, Funky Cole Medina and Free Ride went without me. Well I was hot. I can’t believe that they took all those bulls to Houston and wouldn’t bring me, and it was a rodeo and Xtreme Bulls and I was missing TV time. There must have been someone there that didn’t want to get on me. Well I’m thinking that’s not very smart. I know they don’t ride me very much, but I’m pretty sure if they are sticky enough to make it to the eight-second mark, they are going to get a check. Either they don’t believe they can ride me, or they aren’t very fond of getting a paycheck. Well it didn’t take me long to get back to my herd. I can’t just hang out with the girls anymore, because there are babies everywhere. My disappointment didn’t last long when I got to the pasture and saw those babies playing, bucking and kicking. I’ve watched several young calves go through the process of becoming a bucking bull. I try to give them advice whenever I can. Genetics only go so far. You have to have heart and mental toughness, knowing that every time they open the gate you are going to do your absolute best to get that cowboy off your back. Then when he rides, he’ll get a good score and everyone will be happy. I guess that influence has gone pretty well. There were five bulls ridden at Houston and all of the scores were over 80. Chance Smart got on Funky Cole Medina in the third round to help him advance to the semi-finals and finals. In the final round he was 91.5 points on Super Freak, just a half a point behind B.J. Schumacher. Now it’s time for me to applaud some of those older bulls that helped me. B.J. rode Hot Diggety Damn for 92 points. That bull is a grandson of Tequila, one of the legends around the ranch. I never got to see him buck, but he’s had lots of stories to tell us in the pasture. It looks like he’s done a good job of passing on his genes as well. So I’m back to being a proud papa and watching the skies for rainstorms. Rain is such a good thing in this country – it means green grass. It also means flash floods, so when we see a dark cloud, it’s time to head for higher ground. We’ve gotten some of that rain and have some green grass. And that means two things to me, it’s time for pasture grazing and the George Paul Memorial is coming up. They told me that this year’s event is going to be sanctioned by the CBR. It doesn’t matter to me who sanctions it, who puts it on, as long as I get to Rock and Roll on the border. I heard another rumor that they are going to use me for the Bounty Bull each day. And, the bounty is worth $10,000. So boys you better get your riding britches ready, because I’ve been getting my exercise and I’m ready for you. Story Continues Below
The George Paul Memorial Bull Riding has always been one of my favorite events. It’s loud and rowdy and close to home. Since I’ve been home more this year I’m looking forward to it more than ever. My time in the pasture has given me time to think. Talk about legends. George Paul rode 79 bulls in a row. I’m pretty sure he never suffered from a confidence issue. I wonder what it would be like to have a guy like that crawl down on my back. I think the results would have gotten us to that 90-point plus effort that I’m always striving for. I think that Chance Smart is one of the hottest guys out there. Super Freak told me the guy is really sticky. He also told me that Chance was praying over him before their trip and that he asked God for safety for both of them and for both of them to do their best. I’d say that’s a pretty fair prayer. The only time I’ve known of a guy to pray about me was when he didn’t want to get on me. I hope when we get to Del Rio, Chance gets an opportunity to get on me. There’s going to be a bunch of great bull riders celebrating George Paul’s legacy May 3rd and 4th. It doesn’t really matter who gets me, I’m going to do my best to keep the oldest continuous bull riding event in the country the biggest party on the Rio Grande. My name is Walk This Way and I am a bull with BADITUDE
