CASPER, Wyo. June 13, 2005 --- This is Robin Webb's first trip to Casper to compete at the College National Finals Rodeo and it certainly will be a memorable one.
The freshman barrel racer from Southeastern Oklahoma State University located in Durant, made the trip here with her two horses Elvis and Shadow. On the way they stopped at a jackpot barrel race in Colorado and both of her
horses came up lame. She took them to the vet and has been icing their legs and getting them in shape to compete here.
After arriving here, going through contestant orientation and check-in, Webb got Elvis out for some practice time at the Natrona County Fairgrounds and was taking him around the barrels. Elvis slipped and fell on Webb's leg. Now, it's not
just her horses who are getting ice on their legs. After a five-hour stint in the emergency room, it was discovered that nothing was broken. More importantly, her horse was just fine. Webb's father is a basketball coach and taped her ankle
for her to compete here on Monday morning.
She managed to get a boot on and make her run. She switched horses and ran Shadow. While making their run, Shadow slipped going around the third barrel and while Webb might have been thinking about him falling, her first concern was about
knocking the barrel over and getting a five-second penalty.
Webb made a penalty-free run and stopped the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company
clock in 14.34 seconds to win the first round of competition.
"It didn't seem like it was that fast," Webb said. "I have a hard time keeping all the barrels up and that was really my first concern."
Like many of the student-athletes here, Webb's family is here to show her support. Her parents Bogie and Amy watched her today and her grandparents are coming in later. For her second run here, she is planning to run Elvis who is Shadow's
father. With two good horses to choose from and a never say die attitude, she could easily leave Casper with more than just memories of icing legs and injuries.
All of the competitors here get three opportunities to compete before the final round next Saturday night. Scores and times will be added together and the top twelve in each event will advance to the finals.
Action continues at the Casper Events Center at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday and the
first performance begins Tuesday night at 7:30.
