Muncy In Contention for Caldwell Night Rodeo Title

CALDWELL, Idaho --Aug. 19, 2010 – Taos Muncy was pretty excited when he found out what horse he would get to compete on at the Caldwell Night Rodeo.

The 2007 world champion from Corona, N.M., had been on the horse once before and been successful last December. That was at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and when the judges added up their scores, Muncy had a second-place finish.

His ride here on Thursday night on Calgary Stampede’s Mata Fact has him tied for third place with Shaun Stroh from Dickinson, N.D. Stroh rode here on Wednesday and they both have 83 points.

In the bareback riding, world standings leader Ryan Gray, from Cheney, Wash., tied with Jared Schlegel from Burns, Colo. Gray got on the horse Gopher Hole and Schlegel rode Black Rose. They were each 84 points and are tied for second place overall.

Barrel racing was very exciting for the near capacity crowd as two members of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association had 17.38 second runs. Sierra Dawn Thomas from Roy, Utah and Sammi Bessert from Loma, Colo., shared the victory lap in front of the rowdies and the civies.

Thomas was also successful in the first round of competition here. She had a time of 17.75 seconds, finishing eighth in the round and winning $359. She is now second in the overall standings with a total time of 35.31. Nancy Hunter from Neola, Utah is still in command of the leader board with a total time of 34.69 seconds.

Friday night’s rodeo performance is part of Wrangler’s Patriot Night. Rodeo fans, contestants and personnel will be dressed in red, white and blue. There are several special activities planned. Rodeo action gets underway at 8 p.m.
