Veteran and Rookie Split Honors in Tie-Down Roping First Round

FORT WORTH --- The first round of tie-down roping competition at the 114th World’s Original Indoor Rodeo is officially in the books after Sunday’s matinee performance with two cowboys splitting the win.

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) veteran Justin Maass of Giddings, Texas, and up-and-comer PRCA rookie Ace Slone of Cuero, Texas, split first place honors and prize money by each tying their calf in 8.2 seconds.

Maass, six time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier and Slone, two time National College Finals Rodeo qualifier set the pace Wednesday morning during the slack competition. The two held onto their lead throughout the weekend with both collecting checks for $5,152.

Maass and Slone are scheduled to compete on their second calf, Feb. 2. Maass will rope in the matinee performance and Slone later that night. The goal is to rope their second just as fast, if not faster, and make it back to finals on Feb., 7.

In the bareback riding, two time WNFR qualifier and 2008 CNFR champion, Kaycee Feild of Payson, Utah, started off with a repeat performance of last year.

During the 2009 Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo, Feild set the pace in the bareback riding the first weekend of competition, taking the lead in the first round, second round, and average.

Sunday matinee performance seemed a bit déjà vu as Feild scored 85 points on Andrews Rodeo Company’s horse Vodka, taking the lead in the first round competition. Sunday night he scored 81 points on his second horse, taking over the lead in the average. Feild is scheduled to compete on his third horse Monday night and is looking to claim the championship that slipped from his grasp at last year’s final round.

The sixth performance is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m.
