Barrel Racer Breaks 17-Second Barrier

FORT WORTH, Texas --- Sometimes inexperience doesn’t matter, just ask barrel racer Sherrylynn Johnson from Henryetta, Okla.

While Johnson is a veteran of the sport, she is riding a new horse that competed in his third rodeo on Wednesday at the Fort Worth Stock Show. J.T., is a big eight-year-old bay gelding that she just got from April Trusty from Olive Branch, Miss.

They are the first barrel racer to stop the clock in under 17 seconds and did it with a blazing-fast 16.95 run. Johnson also rode J.T. at Odessa, Texas, and Denver, Colo., and while she didn’t have great performances, she gained confidence in the new horse and knew that he would excel in the rodeo arena eventually.

There are a total of 230 barrel racers here with over half left to compete. There is the possibility that Johnson’s time won’t hold down the first place position, but she is very likely to get a check in the first round and advance to the progressive round.

“I’m thrilled beyond words,” Johnson said. “Sometimes you just know. I got on him, we clicked and I just knew that we were going to be a team.”

The last team member she had was a horse named Jet that she lost in a tragic accident. That horse came to her through Cary Quackenbush. Quackenbush knew about J.T. and thought that the Johnson, Trusty, J.T. combination would work.

“I owe it all to Cary,” she said. “And, the Trusty’s are such nice people. They just want me to get to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and do it on J.T. I couldn’t be more excited right now.”

Johnson’s husband, Mike also competed here in tie-down roping. He had a solid run, but the calf kicked free and he didn’t have a time. He’s also riding an eight-year-old gelding, young in the rodeo industry. He has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 23 times and is working towards another one next December. Hopefully the duo will both be there.

Shaun Stroh from Dickinson, N.D., took a break from rodeo after winning the saddle bronc riding championship at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) last December. His first competition was Tuesday night in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum where he scored 84 points on J.Bar J Rodeo’s horse named Tipped Off.

He came back on Wednesday night with an 85-point effort on Frontier Rodeo’s Little Kitty, who has also been to the WNFR. Stroh now has a commanding lead in the over-all standings here with 169 points. He is headed back to Dickinson, spend some more time with his family, then to the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo in Rapid City and hopefully back here for the finals.

“Fort Worth has always been pretty good to me,” Stroh said. “I had a hard time leaving and coming down here. The older kids are understanding, but it’s not as easy with the little ones.” Stroh and his wife Shannon have four boys and one girl.

The ninth performance of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
