Hand Eye Coordination Helps Tie-Down Roper Susan Kanode
FORT WORTH, Texas --- There is no doubt that roping that riding down the arena on the back of a running horse, swinging a rope and catching a calf requires great hand eye coordination. Randall Carlisle from Lipan, Texas, just might have an edge over the rest of the field in that respect. While he is just 5 foot 9 inches tall, Carlisle holds the national record for the most 3-point baskets made in high school at 516 according to National High School Sports Record Book. While he could have pursued a college career in basketball, his love for the rodeo arena and tie-down roping came first. Carlisle has been a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 2006 and has earned over $167,000 but has yet to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) Carlisle put himself closer to that goal at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo on Thursday night. He stopped the clock in 7.9 seconds, the fastest run of the rodeo in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum so far. Unfortunately he had a no time here on his first run, but with rounds that pay well over $6,000, Carlisle was pleased with his performance. “I put it on the line every time I back into the box,” Carlisle said. “I go for first every time. I had a calf that was really good and knew if I could keep her on her feet and get her tied, I could be fast. I’m blessed that it worked out the way it did.” Carlisle was riding his 14-year old gelding named Flop. When he first competed here, he and Flop had made the drive from Denver, so he switched horses. That didn’t work out as well, he went back to the practice pen and then let Flop do his job. “He’s a winner,” Carlisle said of the horse. “He lets me do what I need to do every time. I just need to stay out of his way and let him do his job.” Other tie-down ropers that would be quick to give credit to their horses on Thursday include WNFR qualifier Tyson Durfey and J.D. Kibbe. They all changed the leaderboard in the second round. Carlisle is now first with his 7.9. Durfey, from Colbert, Wash., is second at 8.0 seconds and Kibbe from Portales, N.M., is third at 8.4. Durfey won the title here last year and over $14,000. Like Carlisle, he didn’t have success in the first round, so won’t qualify for the finals here on Feb. 7. However, he still stands to earn a good paycheck based on his 8.0-second run in the ninth performance. Friday begins 10 days of two or more performances per day, so there will be plenty of action for rodeo fans to see. The 10th performance begins at 2 p.m. and the 11th will start at 7:30 p.m. Story Continues Below
