Brazile Makes Plans for National Western Finals
Susan Kanode

DENVER, Colo. --- Trevor Brazile has taken the lead in the over-all standings in tie-down roping thanks in part to his performance at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Tuesday.

The Decatur, Texas, cowboy had a 7.4 second run on Monday, then came back and followed it up with an 8.1 at the Tuesday matinee. His Monday run leads the first round of competition. His Tuesday run is in sixth place in the second round. With nine more performances before the finals, he may not hold his positions in the rounds but is very likely to be among the top 12 who qualify for the finals on Jan. 24.

Brazile has won seven of the last eight world championships in the all-around category. The man that kept him from consecutive world titles is Ryan Jarrett, from Summerville, Ga. Jarrett, who competes in tie-down roping and steer wrestling won his title in 2005.

Jarrett competed in his signature events here and while he didn’t have any luck in the steer wrestling, he did take the lead in the second round. Jarrett now has surpassed Brazile’s fast time of 7.4 with a 7.3-second run at the Tuesday matinee.

He is now leading the second round. However, he will not qualify for the finals because he was unsuccessful in the first round of competition.

“The rounds pay here too,” Jarrett said. “I was disappointed after the first round so it was nice to come back and have a solid performance.”

Rodeo competition continues here on Wednesday with performances at 2 and 7:30. Among the contestants scheduled to compete in bull riding is Jed Moore from Cheyenne, Wyo. Moore won his second consecutive Stampede Race at the Cowboy Downhill held in Steamboat Springs, Colo., in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

He also finished in third place in the dual slalom timed event. Bareback riders Jared Schlegel, from Burns, Colo., and Kaycee Field, from Elk Ridge, Utah placed first and second in the timed events. The duo are traveling partners and both are former champions from the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.
