Barrel Racers Steal Show at National
Western Stock Show Rodeo
DENVER, Colo. --- Wednesday was definitely a day for barrel racers to make headlines at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo Leads changed in every category through the two performances. During the matinee, Lisa Lockhart from Oelrichs, S.D., took the lead in the second round. Her 15.23 second run is the fastest of the rodeo so far. Unfortunately, Lockhard incurred a five-second penalty in the first round for knocking the third barrel over, so she only has an opportunity to win money in the round. Right behind Lockhart was reigning world champion Brittany Pozzi from Victoria, Texas, who stopped the clock in 15.25 seconds. Pozzi was aboard her great horse Stitch and now leads the over-all category with a total time of 30.72 seconds on two runs. Theresa Walter from Billings, Mont., is in second with 30.92. During the evening performance it was Jessi Eagleberger from Stringtown, Okla., who changed the leader board. She stopped the clock in 15.34 seconds in her first appearance here, the fastest time in the first round so far. Eagleberger will make her second run during the Thursday morning rodeo and has the opportunity to overtake Pozzi’s over-all lead. While she had some bad luck here, the crowd favorite both Tuesday night and Wednesday morning was June Holeman from Arcadia, Neb. Holeman was riding her great horse Sparky and if they had an eight to five day job, both would be retired. Sparky is 21 years old which translates to over 80 in human years. Holeman is 67. In the first run, they had a 15.35 second run, which would have been placing but they hit the second barrel and incurred a five second penalty. They came back strong on Wednesday afternoon with a 15.47 time but are just out of the money. “I’m just so proud of Sparky,” Holeman said. “He’s had some injuries and to have him running like this again is wonderful.” Rodeo action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Thursday with performances at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Story Continues Below
