Who’s Who of Team Roping Making Bid for Denver Finals Susan Kanode For the National Western Stock Show
DENVER, Colo. --- The finals of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo is starting to take shape and it looks like team roping will be very exciting. At Friday’s matinee performance new teams moved into the four of the top five positions in the over-all standings. Leading the pack was Clay Tryan, the 2005 world champion heeler from Billings, Mont., and Travis Graves from Jay, Okla. This is a new partnership for 2010 that appears to be working well. They stopped the clock in 4.2 seconds to tie for the lead in the second round. They lead the over-all standings with a total of 9.8 seconds on two runs. Right behind them are the only twins to ever qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) roping together. Jake and Jim Ross Cooper from Stephenville, Texas, have a total time of 10.5 seconds. They are the sons of former world champion and ProRodeo Hall of Fame member Jimmie Cooper and while they weren’t born with a rope in their hands, they were swinging one as soon as they could. Chad Masters has won the National Western Stock Show rodeo twice and is the defending world champion roping with Michael Jones. Masters, originally from Tennessee but making his home in Santo, Texas, now roped here this year with Jade Corkill from Fallon, Nev. Masters is also a former world champion having won the heading title in 2007. They are third here so far with a total time of 11.0 seconds. In fifth place is Master’s best friend, Luke Brown, who is roping with Martin Lucero. Both live near Stephenville, Texas, but it is a long way from Brown’s original home of Rock Hill, S.C. Brown has qualified for the WNFR twice and Lucero has been there 10 times. They are in fifth place with 11.4 seconds. Colorado’s own Cody Gardner from Fort Lupton took the lead in the second round of bull riding with a 91-point effort on Cervi & Guidry’s Hot Diggity Damn. Unfortunately, he has only ridden one bull here so will not qualify for the finals here. Also during the Friday night performance, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and Coors announced a new three-year contract for Coors to continue to be the official beer of ProRodeo. PRCA Commissioner Karl Stressman and Coors Chairman Pete Coors made the announcement during the January 22 performance of the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver. "The PRCA is pleased to strengthen and lengthen the longtime relationship between the sport of professional rodeo and Coors," Stressman said. "The PRCA and Coors have been great friends for many years, and we look forward to a long and successful future together. I can't think of a better place to make this announcement than at a great PRCA rodeo in Pete Coors' backyard. Thank you, Pete, and thank you, Coors. Together, we can take the Cowboy Sport to the next level, and we're looking forward to it." There are three rodeo performances on Saturday, 11 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. First round winners will be determined after the 3:30 performance. Second round winners and final round qualifiers will be decided after the 8 p.m. rodeo.
