McFarland’s Come Back Story Continues DENVER, Colo.--- Last June, bareback rider Tom McFarland broke his riding arm in 28 places. He was at the rodeo in Pecos, Texas, when a bucking horse flipped over on top of him in the chute. He couldn’t get his hand out of his rigging, so they cut the cinch and transported him to the hospital with his bareback rigging in tow. Doctors didn’t ever expect him to ride again, but once again, cowboy try has proven medical experts wrong. McFarland got on his first horse last week in Odessa, Texas, scored 81 points and earned a check. He came to the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in the Denver Coliseum excited to ride and hoping his success would continue. His first ride here was at the Saturday matinee where he scored 82 points and won nearly $500. His second round horse took him to an 80-point marking. He is now 162 points on two rides and will compete at the finals here Sunday. “My arm is feeling so good,” he said. “When it was time to get off my horse, I just wanted to keep riding it felt so good and was so much fun.” McFarland and his wife Ashley have three young daughters and the rodeo community raised money to help with expenses while he was recovering. Now, he is on a path to support his family with rodeo earnings and hopefully qualify for his fifth Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Steer wrestling saw reigning world champion Lee Graves move into the standings on Saturday. Graves, who makes his home in Calgary, Canada, had runs of 4.2 and 4.3 to move into a tie for first place.
