DENVER, Colo. --- Chad Ferley from Oelrichs, S.D., has
accomplished much in his career as a saddle bronc rider in the
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).
He has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo four
times and accomplished the ultimate of winning a world championship.
However, Ferley has never won a title at Denver or any of the big
building rodeos.
He’s picked checks up along the way, but the bulk of his
success has come in the summer at rodeos like Ellensburg, Wash., and San
Juan Capistrano, Calif. Ferley is hoping to change that in 2010 and get
his season started off early. He took a major step towards that goal in
the Denver Coliseum on Saturday.
At the matinee performance he rode Burch Rodeo’s horse Hippy
Chick for 80 points. He came back at the evening performance and rode
Cervi Championship Rodeo’s horse Lakota’s Pet for 81. He now is tied for
fourth in the first round, leads the second round and the over-all
standings.
“I got on some great horses here today,” he said. “It’s far
from over, but I feel pretty good about how it’s going. I should make it
back here for the finals. I’ve never had a really good winter so this
would be a great way to change that.”
In barrel racing, last year’s champion Nancy Hunter from
Neola, Utah took the over-all lead thanks in part to her 15.46 run in
the morning performance. Hunter has a total time of 30.96 seconds on two
runs.
Bradley Harter from Weatherford, Texas, was hoping to repeat
his past success here, but hit the dirt early in the saddle bronc riding
Saturday morning. Harter had won championships here two of the past
three years.
Performances on Sunday start at 2 and 7:30 p.m., with new
contestants making their first and second appearances.
