Austin, Texas, March 28, 2010 – Tie-Down Roper Ace Slone of
Cuero, Texas is one of the top young athletes in professional rodeo. The
21-year-old is currently winning the Tie-Down Roping Rookie of the Year and
is ranked in the top 10 in the World Standings. Ace is also pursuing a
degree at Texas A&M University on a full academic scholarship through the
Terry Foundation (he was chosen from thousands of applicants). He is
majoring in Agribusiness and plans to take over the family business, Tod
Slone Saddles, when he retires from rodeo. In addition to competing in
ProRodeo, Ace is a member of the Texas A&M Rodeo Team where he has qualified
for the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) the last two years.
The talented roper is certainly accustomed to success. Ace finished third in
his high school graduating class and played strong safety and fullback for a
Cuero football team that was ranked number one in Texas all three years that
Ace was on varsity. In addition, Ace was also a star for his high school
baseball team and had heavy interest from several Division 1 colleges that
desired his services in both sports. However, as Ace says, “Rodeo is my
life.” Ace’s father, Tod, qualified for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR)
seven times and won the Tie-Down Roping Average title at the NFR in 1994.
Growing up, Ace desired to follow in his father’s footsteps and certainly
took advantage of his tutelage. Through Tod’s guidance, along with his
natural-born-talent, Ace has already been able to find a tremendous amount
of success in the arena.
Currently, Ace is enjoying life as a professional Tie-Down Roper. “I feel
like I am getting better with every run” said Slone, “I’m confident in my
abilities and excited about what this year has in store for me.” Although
Ace won over $5,000 and finished fifth in the average at Rodeo Austin, a
small mishap in the Finals cost Ace the Rodeo Austin championship. “Austin
was two away from being an Aggie’s favorite city,” he said laughing.
Nevertheless, Ace had tremendous praise for Rodeo Austin and noted the
organization’s commitment to both ProRodeo cowboys and the youth it supports
through scholarships.
