COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Second chances don’t come around often in life, so when they do, it’s nice to capitalize on them. Bull rider Allen Helmuth was able to take advantage of just such a second chance at the Ramona (Calif.) Rodeo, which was held May 21-23. The Ellensburg, Wash., cowboy scored 81 points on Honeycutt Rodeo’s Wake Up Call to win his event after being bucked off the bull two years ago at the same rodeo.

Helmuth was never really able to get comfortable with the difficult-to-ride bull, because he had a wide variety of jumps in their second meeting, but made the whistle.

“Thank the Lord I stayed on,” said Helmuth, 26. “The adrenaline that comes with winning, there is no feeling like that in the world.

Helmuth works part time doing framing and concrete foundations. The construction job is working really well with competing in ProRodeo.

“The guy I work for lets me set my own schedule, so I can come and go as I please,” said Helmuth, who won $1,939 in Ramona. “Once the summer season comes along and there are more rodeos, I’ll probably be gone almost all the time.”

The other top finishers at the Ramona Rodeo were Austin Adams (all-around), Bee Jay Scott (bareback riding), Rhett Kennedy (steer wrestling), Jake Rodriguez and Brandon Bates (team roping), Darin Redelsperger (saddle bronc riding), Jesse Egan (tie-down roping) and Katie Qualls (barrel racing).
