Stroh Wins Again
SAN ANTONIO, Texas ---No one was more surprised than Shaun Stroh when his 79-point ride in saddle bronc riding held onto the top spot at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Wednesday night. Stroh was the first saddle bronc rider to leave the chute. He was on the horse named Alley Inn from Kesler Rodeo and his first concern was making it to the end of the eight-second ride. When he did that and heard rodeo announcers Randy Corley and Hadley Barrett talk about 79 points, he thought he might get a check. Stroh was able to benefit from other’s misfortune as four of the 12 riders bucked off. Then, the remainder of the field all had scores below his 79. This was the second of four rounds that Stroh won outright. He also tied for first in two rounds. Stroh is at the top of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys World standings. The biggest part of his $16,753 in earnings came from winning the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo which just ended on Feb. 7 “It’s unbelievable,” Stroh said. “Winning Fort Worth was huge, then to come here and do this well is just awesome.” With his success here so far, he will add another $7,778 and still has the semi-finals and finals to compete in. Stroh was the high money winner of all the contestants in the fourth bracket. The top five money earners in each event advance to the semi-finals. The semi-finals starts Thursday night and concludes Friday. During those two performances, 10 contestants in each event will compete. They will be adding up their earnings to see who are among the top six to advance to Saturday night’s finals. The semi-finals will pay four places. Stroh will be at the top of the earnings standings and even if he doesn’t get a check in the semi-finals will probably have enough to advance to the finals. However, he is hoping to add to his total and would like nothing more than to win the final round and the $12,445 that goes with it. “San Antonio has always been pretty good to me,” he said. “It’s been amazing to come here and have the success I’ve had. To come here and win two and split to is phenomenal .” Benette Barrington, from Lubbock, Texas had her winning streak tweaked by 2008 world champion Lindsay Sears. Sears, from Nanton, Alberta won the fourth round of the barrel racing aboard her great horse Martha with a 13.98-second run. That added to Sears’ previous earnings to move her into fourth place and advance her to the finals. Barrington placed fourth in the round and leads the standings with $6,741 in earnings. Marcus Michaelis from Caldwell, Idaho had won the first three rounds of bull riding, but Andrews Rodeo’s Desperado kept him from winning his fourth. Michaelis still earned $6,223 and will be among the favorites to advance to the finals. The first performance of the semi-finals will start in the AT&T Center on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Story Continues Below
