COLEMAN PROCTOR AND
JAKE LONG NAMED
GRAND CHAMPIONS OF
THE 28TH
ANNUAL
GEORGE STRAIT TEAM
ROPING CLASSIC
San Antonio, TN
(March 13, 2010)
– Header Jake
Long (26) and
Heeler Coleman
Proctor (25)
have been best
friends since
toddlers.
They’ve roped
together since
kids and dreamed
of a moment like
today for many
years. After
two days of
intense
competition, the
dust settled and
it was the two
young men who
beat out 468
other teams to
become the Grand
Prize winners of
the prestigious
GSTRC. The
Long-Coleman
team finished
with a 14.93
combined time
and rode away
with custom
painted GSTRC
Championship
Chevy Silverado
Duallies from
Cavendar
Chevrolet
(Boerne, TX),
Strait X-treme
horse trailers
from Bruton
Trailers,
Twister saddles
from Tractor
Supply, Resitol
roping bags,
jackets from
Wrangler and
Justin, Gist
belt buckles and
half of the
$159,630 cash
payoff.
“I don’t know
when this is
going to sink in
but it’s pretty
incredible,”
said Long. “He
and I have been
best friends
since we were
knee high to a
grasshopper and
to do this
together
probably is the
most special
thing that has
ever happened to
us.”
“I couldn’t
agree more,”
added Proctor.
“We’ve been to
this roping for
so many years
and we’ve
dreamed about
this for so
long. We run
that steer
thousands of
times and to
come out here
and do this in
front of all
these people and
for this much
money, well
there just isn’t
a better stage
for team
roping. Whether
you are a fan, a
part-timer, do
it for fun or
make a living at
it there’s
nothing better
than this.”
The total cash
payoff of this
year’s GSTRC was
$478,500. Add in
prizes and the cash
value awarded this
weekend was over
$600,000.
Both Long and Proctor
were quick to thank
Strait and his
organization. “Thanks to
George for all he does
for team ropers. We
couldn’t survive without
something like this. Not
just us but a lot of
ropers won money today
and yesterday and it’s
just great for guys who
rope and try to feed
their families this way
to be able to come here
and win something.
Second place
winners, brothers
Riley and Brady
Minor, took home
$63,852 and prizes
with a time of
15.08. Third place
went to Brady Tryan
and Cody Doescher
with a time of
15.40. They won
$43,898 and other
prizes.
The 28th
Annual George Strait
Team Roping Classic
(GSTRC) took
place Friday and
Saturday, March 12 &
13, 2010 at the San
Antonio Rose Palace
in San Antonio,
Texas. The event,
which originated as
a small family
roping by George and
his late brother
Buddy in 1982, has
grown into the most
prestigious open
Team Roping
competition in the
country with
hundreds of
thousands of dollars
up for grabs each
year. The GSTRC
consistently
attracts the biggest
names in the sport
each year but is not
just for the big
names. As an open
roping, ropers of
all levels may
compete alongside
each other for a
chance at the big
winnings.
