College Buddies Excel at All American ProRodeo Finals

WACO, Texas --- When Cort Scheer and Casey Colletti were competing together at Garden City Community College in Kansas, they were planning their future as members of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

They both won titles in the Central Plains Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association in 2006, Scheer in saddle bronc riding and Colletti in bareback riding. Thursday night found them each winning the progressive round at the All American ProRodeo Finals presented by Pendleton Whisky.

With Scheer pulling his bareback rigging, Colletti settled down on the back of Andrews Rodeo Company’s Termite and nodded his head. Eight seconds later, the judges added up their scores and he had an 84-point marking. That was good enough to win the round and an additional $2,472. Colletti had already won $4,016 here.

“I’d heard a lot of different things about that horse,” Colletti said. “I’d only seen him once before and that was two years ago. He was really good and fun to ride. I’ve been trying to get on every one of them like they are the rankest horses I’ve ever been on and so far it’s working.”

Scheer also got on a horse owned by Sammy Andrews named Pepperment. This time it was Colletti’s turn to help and it resulted in another 84- point effort. With previous earnings of $3,706, Sheer’s total is now at $6,177. His success here is a cap to his regular season where he qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) and is helping him prepare for that event.

“I came to Waco for the atmosphere and the money,” he said. “You get to hang out with your buddies and hopefully get on several horses. It’s a chance for me to get on before the finals, keep my mind on it and keep me in shape.”

If the success he is having here carries through to Las Vegas and the WNFR, Scheer’s season could conclude with a world title. He enters rodeo’s championship event in seventh place.

“I’ve been really blessed this year,” Scheer added. “It’s been great. Coming here and winning the round the same night as Casey was awesome. Peppermint was one of the best horses I’ve gotten on in a while. It felt amazing and makes you crave bronc riding. It was fun.”

Keeping it in the family on Thursday night was the husband and wife duo of Clayton and Kristen Williams from Carthage, Texas. Clayton watched as Kristen won the barrel race with a 16.12 second run. Then he rode his bull for 83, good enough to tie for second with Travis Atkinson, from Lehi, Utah. Another Utahan, Tag Elliott from Thatcher won the bull riding with an 86 on Andrew’s Bootlegger.

The top 10 competitors in each event from Thursday night’s rodeo advance to Friday night’s quarter-finals which begins at 7 p.m.
