Texans quite successful at West of the
Pecos Rodeo
PECOS, Texas – Chris Harris is a Texan and quite proud of it. Right now, he’s riding a Lone Star streak toward a seventh qualification to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. His late-June victory at the West of the Pecos Rodeo marked the ninth time this season the Itasca, Texas, cowboy has won a bareback riding title. Of those, seven have come from the his home state. On Friday, June 25, Harris scored 88 points while riding another Texan, Deuces Night, a bucking beast from Dallas-based livestock firm Carr Pro Rodeo. That was better than all riders in the event and the second highest marked ride of the weekend – only bull rider Bryan Richardson’s 89 was better. The $3,748 Harris earned in Pecos also moved his season earnings to $22,656, good enough for 21st in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s bareback riding world standings. Richardson, too, is a Texan, and his ride on Carr’s Sippin Jack was worth more than $3,900. The Dallas bull rider outlasted an elite field and two 88-point rides to win the title. It was his third win this season. Jace Garrett of Alliance, Neb., made a significant move in West Texas with his 88-point marking atop Carr’s True Lies to win saddle bronc riding. Garrett, who won in Corpus Christi, Texas, and Clovis, N.M., this year, was two points better than the runner-up, 2008 world champion Cody Wright. Nick Guy of Sparta, Wis., won the opening go-round and finished tied for third in the second to claim the steer wrestling title. Overall, he turfed two steers in 9.5 seconds to win $4,247. NFR qualifiers Luke Brown and Martin Lucero, both of Stephenville, Texas, won the team roping, stopping the clock in 13.3 seconds over two runs. Tie down roper Clay Cerney of Brazoria, Texas, earned $5,488 by winning the first round, finishing third in the second and claiming the average title. His cumulative total of 17.7 seconds was nearly two seconds faster than runner-up Houston Hutto. Paul Patten of Abilene, Texas, placed in two go-rounds and finished the rodeo with a three-run total of 45.7 seconds to win steer roping. He pocketed $3,603. Texas barrel racers Lindsey Ewing of Midland and Tammy Fischer of Ledbetter earned a share of the Pecos title, rounding the cloverleaf pattern in 17.66 seconds. They each earned $2,758.
