Feather River College announces the addition of Nevada sports
hero, JESSE SEGURA, as their new Head Rodeo Coach. Segura
is arguably one of the best college rodeo athletes in the country. Segura’s
leadership will elevate Feather River’s inaugural men and women’s rodeo
program next fall to west coast prominence. "Jesse is very talented and
goal oriented, with an exceptional ability to work with and bring out the best
in those around him. He is truly an impressive young man," stated Kenny C.
Guinn, Governor of Nevada. Last spring, as an athlete, Segura was crowned Men’s
All Around Champion at the College National Finals in Casper, Wyoming.
Jesse Segura will immediately join the Golden Eagles impressive coaching staff
with the goal of recruiting the nation’s top student athletes. If the student
athletes currently enrolled at Feather River College are any indication of the
type of students the college will see enrolling in the new rodeo program, watch
out!
Feather River College, a two-year community college nestled
in the small mountain town of Quincy just 1 ½ hours from Reno, Nevada, is well
known for producing championship student athletes in most all sports. Last year,
the Men’s Baseball team received state recognition for the best overall grade
point average in the State and four members of the Women’s Softball team
captured the Academic All-American Award. Individual student athletes have
earned honors within Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society and today at the State
Capital, Thomas Brooks, a defensive back on the football team, was named to the
Phi Theta Kappa All-California Academic Team. This award was bestowed upon 63
top community college students statewide, only three of which were student
athletes. Some of the nations best athletes such as Antoine White, Nevada Player
of the Year for 2001, have chosen Feather River College to boost their academic
and athletic career. Recently White accepted a football scholarship at Minnesota
State University after completing two years with the Golden Eagles. NJCAA All
American Cornell Johnson transferred from the east coast to Feather River
College to complete his sophomore year. Johnson, like White, also earned the
distinction of Nevada Player of the Year in 2002, and gained recognition by ESPN
Sports as one of the top 10 running backs in the nation. The college’s
baseball program has continually produced top players who have been drafted to
the major leagues and the Men’s Basketball program has transferred several
students into major universities. FRC alumni, Ricky Dominguez, played in the
NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships (March Madness) as a guard for University
of Chicago, Illinois. Dominguez choose Feather River because of the quality
coaching staff and small class sizes.
This little mountain college’s coaching staff includes some
real heavy hitters. Randy Rick, the Men’s Basketball Coach, is known
nationwide as a technical shooting expert and he is a former All–American and
professional athlete. "Randy Rick coaches the total person, not just the
sport of basketball," stated John Able, Randy Rick’s college coach and
Assistant Olympic Basketball Coach (1964). Reed Peters, the Head Baseball Coach
is a former NCAA D-I Academic All American. At University of Nevada Las Vegas
Peters was twice selected to the All BIG WEST all conference team. Last spring
Peters resigned as Head Coach of the Air Force Academy team (an NCAA Division
One program) in order to accept the head-coaching job with Feather River’s
ball club. Reed’s accomplishments at Air Force earned him the 2002 Mountain
West Coast Conference Coach of the Year. Feather River College’s newly
established football program is headed up by former Eastern Oregon University
Coach, Rob Cushman. Cushman, a veteran coach, has led Feather River’s football
program into back-to-back championship bowl games in the program’s first
two-years of competition. "Sports are a big deal in Quincy, California. I
have coached a lot of different levels at various colleges, and this college has
everything it takes to produce champions," stated Rob Cushman. "There
are not many distractions here in the mountains, it is a beautiful setting were
students can concentrate on bettering themselves both academically and
athletically." Coincidentally, a former Olympic level athlete and
Collegiate All-American Terry Pack manages the residence hall facilities and
oversees a comprehensive student life program. Pack, The Director of Student
Life and Development, was the 2002 NJCAA Coach of the Year in the sport of
wrestling. He joined Feather River College this past fall after coaching his
team to the highest honors in the country. Pack’s teams earned both the
National Team Championship and Academic Team Champion. At Feather River College
Pack is implementing a student life and development program that compliments the
overall goals of the college.
Jesse Segura and the college’s newest sport venture (Rodeo)
will bring additional national recognition to the college. "Things
definitely are in place at Feather River and I am very impressed with the campus
and facilities," stated newly hired Rodeo Coach, Jesse Segura. "The
huge indoor riding arena, the excellent Equine Studies faculty, and the student
housing complex will help recruit the nations best students." The Equine
Studies program is under the direction of Russell Reid, a faculty member who has
been honored across the country for his horsemanship knowledge. Reid understands
how Rodeo will enhance his academic program and he is more than enthusiastic to
have Segura oversee the Rodeo program. "With Jesse’s Cal Poly education
and leadership skills, he will be an excellent role model for students,"
stated Russell Reid. "Jessie holds a Bachelors of Science in Earth Science
with a minor in Public Administration from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and is
currently completing his Masters degree in Environmental Science. Having a Rodeo
program in Quincy is a great fit. Quincy has long been the home of the Northern
California State High School Rodeo Finals." In preparation for the new
college program the County Supervisors have financially committed to remodeling
the Fairground’s rodeo facility. Currently the complex is under construction
and will include a new state-of-the-art arena complete with covered seating and
campground facilities.
Feather River Rodeo, as well as the new Men and Women’s
Soccer program, will begin their competitions for the first time this fall.
