SAN ANTONIO --- The fifth
performance of the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo saw more successful bull rides
than any of the previous four.
Cody Buller, a
newcomer in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association from Glendive, Mont.,
made a big move when he rode Wanna Dance from the Diamond G Rodeo
Company. Buller’s 83-point marking is now at the top of the U.S. Smokeless
Tobacco Company Scoreboard.
The bull riding here is
progressive. All 185 contestants ride once, then the top contestants from that
round will ride in the last four performances of the regular competition. The
top 12 competitors after the progressive round will qualify for the Wrangler
ProRodeo Tour Round on Sunday, Feb. 22.
After the first four
performances, there were only seven riders that had received scores. Tuesday
night’s performers were the most successful so far with six of the 11 riders
receiving scores. Ty Odden, a college rodeo standout from Miller, S.D.,
received the option of a reride after the bull he originally rode hooked a gate
in the arena with his head and lifted it off the hinges. The gate came down on
Odden’s leg and while he definitely was sore and will have a big bruise, he
came back and rode another bull for 80 points.
Ricky Canton from
Cleveland, Texas, roped and tied his calf in 8.4 seconds to move to the lead in
the second round. Unfortunately, Canton was not successful in the first round of
competition, so this is his only opportunity to collect any money from San
Antonio.
The San Antonio Stock Show
Rodeo is the third stop on the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour and contestants are vying
for points as well as a portion of the prize money here. At the conclusion of
the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo in May, the top 12 contestants in all of
the events will qualify for the $500,000 Pace Picante ProRodeo Chute-Out in Las
Vegas.
The sixth performance of the
rodeo will be Wednesday at 7 p.m.
