COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Courtesy PRCA – Andrews Rodeo of Bagwell, Texas, joined an elite group of stock contractors – now at six – who have had two of their animals selected for Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Top Stock Awards in the same year. PTSD Power Play earned the bareback riding honor in close balloting over Frontier Rodeo’s Delta Ship, and the bull riding award went to Swat Slinger.
Swat Slinger was voted the top bull of the night in Round 2 and Round 9, bucking off Ty Wallace and Trey Benton III. PTSD Power Play jettisoned Tim O’Connell in Round 2 to be named bareback riding horse of the night, and then came back in Round 7 to match up with Tilden Hooper for an 84-point ride that earned Hooper a second-place check.
Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Killer Bee, who was voted horse of the night in Round 2 after bucking off Cody DeMoss and again in Round 7 for putting Bradley Harter in the dirt, received the Top Stock Award for saddle bronc riding.
It was the first time since 2010 that one stock contracting firm had secured two bucking stock awards in the same year, when Frontier Rodeo of Winnie, Texas, won the bareback riding and saddle bronc riding buckles. No one had managed this same bareback/bull riding double since Beutler & Gaylord did it in 1997.
The other double winners were Kesler Rodeo (2000), Bob Aber (1977) and Harry Knight (1963).
Frontier Rodeo, which had Top Stock wins in 2009, 2010 (2), 2011 and 2012, had the most volume in the balloting. Apart from Delta Ship finishing second in the bareback riding, the company’s Full Baggage was fourth and Show Stomper fifth in that category. Frontier also had a pair of top five horses in the saddle bronc riding – with PRCA Horse of the Year Medicine Woman in second place and Wild Bill in fourth.
